THE JOURNEY TO THE JUNGLE LODGE
Yosi Ocha Ayahuasca retreat center is based in the depths of the Amazon rainforest, within the Allpahuayo-Mishana National Reserve, 22 km southwest of Iquitos city. This protected area is located in the northeast of Peru, in the province of Maynas, in the Loreto region. Also known as the “capital of the Peruvian Amazon”, Iquitos is the largest city in the world that is not on an island, but cannot be reached by road and is only accessible by river and air transport.
Transportation from and to Iquitos is included in the price of our retreats, so we will either pick you up at the airport or from your hotel in Iquitos. The trip to Yosi Ocha from Iquitos airport takes about 45 minutes by car, and it is already an adventure in itself during which one becomes conscious of leaving behind the cement grey of any known city while entering the true lung of the planet.
There is a very diverse ecosystem in this magnificent part of the jungle that includes an important amount of master trees, majestic vines of impressive sizes and forms, varied wildlife (monkeys, iguanas, toucans, etc.) and distinctive white sands that characterize this region so special. The property of Yosi Ocha, of more than 50 hectares, is crossed by streams of reddish water that contribute even more to the incomparable beauty of the place.
From Yosi Ocha and after a 30-minute walk along the jungle roads you reach the Nanay River, which rises in the mountains of Ecuador and joins the Amazon in Iquitos. Unlike the Amazon River, it is completely safe to swim in the Nanay. But one must bear in mind that any excursion outside the center, should only be done with the knowledge of the shaman who should make the relevant protection ritual, especially for those who are receiving treatments, as they are more vulnerable to all kinds of energy. If you want to make an excursion during your stay, let us know and we can organize visits to local wildlife reserves, such as the Butterfly Farm “Pilpintuwasi” and the animal orphanage (“Isla de los Monos”).
In Yosi Ocha, there are eight eco-friendly bungalows constructed with local materials. Each bungalow has its own private toilet and shower. Large windows are covered with anti-insect screens following the typical construction style of the Peruvian Amazon. The beds also have anti-mosquito nets to ensure better protection and peaceful rest of our guests.
When you make your booking, you can either choose to stay in a single bungalow on your own, or share the bungalow with your partner or a friend, in which case we will prepare a big bed or two single beds for you, just let us which option you prefer.
THE CEREMONIAL MALOCA
Within the culture of the native Amazonian tribes, the maloca is the ancestral house destined for communal ceremonies and rituals. It is used to host all sorts of events and gather people from all walks of life. This is the space in which knowledge is transmitted between generations, the advice is shared, the heart and soul are healed, work is taught, planned and organized, legislations are made and justice is imparted. This is where the ills of the entire community are healed collectively through the word, the song and the dance. Traditionally, it has been conceived as a sacred space that symbolizes the womb of Mother Earth, and the house of the Sun and the Moon.
The ceremonial maloca in the Yosi Ocha Ayahuasca retreat has a diameter of 12 meters. The construction of this beautiful circular structure required specific building methods that, according to legends, have been taught by the spirits to the first builders in order not to forget its sacred origin.
THE DINING ROOM
The spacious dining room is one of the favorite hang-out places of our guests. It has electricity produced by solar panels, so this is where you will be able to recharge your electronic gadgets.
Our kitchen team, led by Rubén, prepares delicious meals with great love, every day. The dishes are made with a wide variety of savory fruits and vegetables, legumes and cereals, eggs, chicken and local fish, in order to provide our guests with a balanced and varied diet, keeping in mind the restrictions of the dieta required by the treatment.
If you follow a strictly vegetarian/vegan diet, or you have some kind of intolerance, please let us know in advance and we will do our best to meet your needs.
NATURAL POOL WITH STREAM WATER
A picturesque red water stream flows through the Yosi Ocha property, giving birth to a natural swimming pool with delightfully refreshing waters. Its reddish color is due to the components it extracts from the jungle plants, making it a powerful medicine in itself. Our guests bathe every day in these magical waters during their work, or simply in their leisure time, enjoying the benefits of the tropical climate.
Yacumama, or Mother Water, is a spirit very present in all the rituals at Yosi Ocha. Water rituals take place every day during the aura-cleansing baths and at the conclusion of other rituals aimed to purify the body from the energies that have been steered and removed during the ceremonies. Through the connection with the spirit of Mother Water and other aquatic spirits, our guests absorb their powerful energies and receive their blessings, which promote a long and healthy life.
THE HOUSE OF HAMMOCKS
The hammock house is a cozy relaxation area built right next to the natural pool where our guests perform their daily purification baths. This original semi-circular construction has been built using traditional methods and materials, which one can appreciate while gently rocking in the hammocks.
The entire space is covered with anti-insect screens so that you can rest peacefully while thinking about the meaning of life and other topics that come to mind after an Ayahuasca night. It is especially appreciated by our guests as a shelter from the rain, a peaceful space where they can read a book, have a little nap, or recharge their electronic gadgets while socializing with other passengers.
The Allpahuayo-Mishana National Reserve is a protected area located in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon rainforest. This beautiful part of the jungle has the peculiarity of growing on very diverse soils, ranging from clay, which we use in our mud-bath rituals, to exceptionally pure white sands that cover all the paths of our Ayahuasca retreat.
From different parts of Yosi Ocha, different roads lead to dense areas of the jungle with an astonishing variety of vegetation and a large number of tall and impressive “palos maestros”, or teacher trees, such as Wimba, Chullachaki Caspi, Remocaspi, Lechecaspi, Tangarana, Tamamuri, Lagarto Caspi, Sirena Caspi, Renaco, Pashaco, etc. Through ancient Shipibo rituals, our participants learn how to connect with the spirit of these majestic teacher trees and communicate with them. They also learn how to identify many medicinal plants and flowers that grow in this tropical forest, and collect them to prepare their daily purification baths.
SHIPIBO ART & HANDICRAFTS
We know how difficult it is to say goodbye to Yosi Ocha, therefore, we recommend you check out our handmade art & handicrafts and find the right piece that clings to your heart to take away as a souvenir. With their skilled hands, Maestro Heberto’s parents and his sisters make the most beautiful traditional Shipibo art in which they weave their love and healing powers.
The colorful display of visionary fabrics with complex Shipibo designs is an authentic feast for the eyes. The family produces a great variety of traditional Shipibo artifacts, such as Ayahuasca and huayruro necklaces, mostacillas bracelets; different ceremonial items such as maracas, handmade pipes, rapé and rapé applicators, traditional tobacco (mapacho), San Pedro powder, etc. You can also buy Agua de Florida and other purifying and special colognes for magnetism and love, as well as the unique “bolas mágicas” specially designed and magnetized by Maestro Heberto.
