THE JOURNEY TO THE JUNGLE LODGE
Yosi Ocha Ayahuasca retreat centre is located within the Allpahuayo Mishana National Park, in the depths of the Amazon rainforest, about 20 km southeast of the city of Iquitos. The trip to Yosi Ocha from the Iquitos airport (an hour and a half in “motokar”) is already an adventure during which one becomes conscious of leaving behind the cement grey of any known city, while entering the true lung of the planet.
There is a very diverse ecosystem in this magnificent part of the jungle that includes an important amount of master trees, majestic vines of impressive sizes and forms, a varied wildlife (monkeys, iguanas, toucans, etc.) and distinctive white sands that characterize this region so special. The property of Yosi Ocha, of more than 5 hectares, is crossed by streams of reddish water that contribute even more to the incomparable beauty of the place.Read more...
From Yosi Ocha and after a 30-minute walk along the jungle roads you reach the Nanay River, which rises in the mountains of Ecuador and joins the Amazon in Iquitos. Unlike the Amazon River, it is completely safe to swim in the Nanay. But one must bear in mind that any excursion outside the centre, should only be done with the knowledge of the shaman who should make the relevant protection ritual, especially for those who are receiving treatments, as they are more vulnerable to all kinds of energy. If you want to make an excursion during your stay, we can organize visits to local wildlife reserves, such as the Butterfly Farm “Pilpintuwasi” and the animal orphanage (“Isla de los Monos”).
In our Ayahuasca retreat centre we have individual and shared bungalows, all ecologically constructed using local materials, furniture included. Each one has its private bathroom and shower. Large windows are covered with insect screens following the typical construction style of the Peruvian Amazon. The beds also have mosquito nets to ensure better protection and peaceful rest of our guests. Most bungalows are located between the dining room and the ceremonial Maloca, but for those who wish to be more isolated and feel completely immersed in the rainforest, we also have bungalows in a denser area of the jungle, at the back of the property.
Within the Shipibo culture and most of the native Amazonian tribes, the maloca is the ancestral house destined to communal ceremonies and rituals. Traditionally it has been conceived as a sacred space that symbolizes the womb of Mother Earth, and the house of the Sun and the Moon. It is used to host all sorts of events and gather people from all walks of life. This is the space in which knowledge is transmitted between generations, the advice is shared, the heart and soul are healed, work is taught, planned and organized, legislations are made and justice is imparted. The maloca is also where the ills of the entire community are healed collectively through the word, the song and the dance. It is a symbol of the embrace and affection.
The ceremonial maloca in the Yosi Ocha Ayahuasca retreat center has a diameter of 12 meters and it can comfortably accommodate 30 people for ceremonies. The construction of this circular structure requires specific building methods that, according to legends, have been taught by the spirits to the first builders in order not to forget its sacred origin.
The dining room is spacious, has a capacity for 30 people and is open 24 hours. It has electricity, a refrigerator that visitors can use and there is always hot water and infusions at your disposal. Our kitchen team, in charge of Rubén, prepares breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. Only white meats (chicken and local fish), eggs and a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, legumes and cereals are used in meals, in order to achieve a complete and varied diet for as many palates as possible, always taking into account the restrictions of the diet of Ayahuasca and other plants of power that are given at the centre.
If a person needs to follow a diet strictly vegetarian, vegan or has some kind of intolerance, please let us know and we will do our best to meet your needs.
NATURAL POOLS WITH STREAM WATER
A picturesque red waters stream flows through the Yosi Ocha property, giving birth to two natural swimming pools with delightfully refreshing waters. Its reddish colour is due to the components it extracts from the jungle plants, making it a powerful medicine in itself. Our guests bathe every day in these magical waters during their work, or simply in their leisure time, enjoying the benefits of the tropical climate.
Yacumama, or Mother Water, is a spirit very present in our rituals with whom we connect daily during the morning aura-cleasning baths, as well as at the conclusion of other rituals, in order to purify the body from the energies that have been steered and removed. Water rituals allow us to connect with Yacumama and other aquatic spirits, absorb their powerful energies, receive their blessings and promote a long and healthy life.
From different parts of the centre, different roads lead to dense areas of the jungle with an astonishing variety of vegetation. This enchanting part of the Amazon rainforest has the peculiarity of housing a large number of “palos maestros”, or teacher trees, such as Renaco, Wimba, Chullachaki Caspi, Remocaspi, Caspi Milk, Tangarana and Tamamuri. Many daily rituals include visits to these palos maestros where one meditates and asks for guidance and protection, for healing and assistance in all works that are being done during the retreat.
Through the ancestral Shipibo rituals, we learn to connect with each one of these majestic master trees. Our participants also learn to recognize and identify many of the medicinal plants that grow naturally in the jungle and to collect plants and flowers for their daily purification baths.
THE HANDCRAFT STORE
We know how difficult it is to say goodbye to Yosi Ocha, therefore, we recommend you to visit our family handcraft store before leaving where you will be able to find a small piece of our hearts to take away as a souvenir.
We have a great variety of traditional Shipibo art & crafts, such as Ayahuasca and huayruro necklaces, mostacillas bracelets and beautiful visionary fabrics with Shipibo designs. We also offer a wide selection of ceremonial items such as handmade pipes, rapé, rapé applicators, San Pedro powder, traditional tobacco (mapacho), Agua de Florida and other purifying perfumes, special colognes for magnetism and love, as well as unique “bolas mágicas” designed and magnetized by Maestro Heberto.
THE HOUSE OF HAMMOCKS
The hammock house is a cosy relaxation area especially appreciated by guests as a shelter from the rain and a place to socialize with other passengers. It is built using traditional methods and materials, which one can appreciate while gently rocking in the hammocks and thinking about meaning life and other topics that come to mind after an Ayahuasca night.
This lovely multipurpose space can be totally transformed throughout the day and, depending on the necessity, and turn into an exhibition room for fascinating Shipibo paintings and art made by family members; a spa where Heberto or his sisters perform massages; or a meeting room where Maestro Heberto discusses with the patients their experiences from the ceremonies. The hammock house has electricity and is available 24 hours a day.
